Supply Chain Management Software Market Withstands Recession

Although it's often hard to see negative numbers and then think positively, new data from Gartner may deserve that reaction. Gartner found that worldwide supply chain management software revenue decreased only 0.7 percent between 2008 and 2009, which doesn't seem bad considering how the global economy was performing at the time.
Granted, not every aspect of the situation was ideal. Gartner reported that new license revenue was down 7.9 percent during that period, which is a little disturbing.
Also, you have to take into account that the statistics are kind of old, so it's hard to be sure things are still all right.
According to a short article the company put together, though, "recurring revenue associated with subscriptions and maintenance were the ‘life vest' of the market, growing 10.8 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively." And those figures are pretty admirable.
Chad Eschinger, a research director at Gartner, concluded as a result, "Despite the slight dip in overall revenue, the market for supply chain applications seems to have largely weathered the recent financial storms. Although the first nine months of 2009 contracted, the fourth quarter sustained 6 percent annual growth, driven by some pent-up demand . . ."
It's probably reasonable to hope (or even expect) that 2010 is going well so far, then. Just keep your fingers crossed that we don't encounter the second half of a way-too-fun-sounding "double dip" recession.
