For at least a couple of days in May, Baltimore, Maryland looks set to become the supply chain capital of the world. This week it was announced that the Supply Chain World North America conference will take place in the city between May 24th and May 26th.
Fair warning: the conference will be expensive by most definitions (early bird pricing for members of the Association for Operations Management, Institute for Supply Management, and Supply Chain Council starts at $1,200), and Baltimore is of course the city that The Wire taught more than a few viewers not to go near without a full complement of bodyguards.
Let's discuss some of the positive aspects, though. Joseph Francis, executive director of the Supply Chain Council, said in a statement, "Supply Chain World is a great opportunity to learn how the world's top companies are building industry-leading supply chains. The conference creates a forum for supply chain leaders to discuss ongoing challenges and find effective solutions, enabling them to build their supply chain capabilities and ensure future success."
Furthermore, speakers will include people from respected organizations like Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, IBM, MIT, and Motorola, along with a few other places.
Sessions are supposed to take place at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel, in any event, where a special rate of $169 per night for a single room is being offered.
Have fun, learn lots, and be sure to exchange plenty of business cards with folks if you decide to attend the conference.
