Thai Floods Seriously Disrupting Global Supply Chain

Over the last few weeks, reports of the damage done by the monstrous floods in Thailand have flooded news feeds across the web. Many people have been swept away by the flood waters and the property damage bill has already risen well above a billion dollars. One of the largest impacts, however, is on the global supply chain, seeing as thailand is Southeast Asia's second largest economy. Thousands of global companies have been forced to shut down production of products made in the country until the flood waters recede and the damage can be repaired. Some of these companies include:

  • Western Digital
  • Seagate
  • Toyota
  • Ford
  • Honda
  • Canon

This list really just covers some of the larger companies, but there are actually thousands of them directly affected in the country and farther down the supply chain as well. Some of these companies, like Honda, have already made many plans to restart their manufacturing plants soon after the waters recede [2]. However, that will really only happen if repairs to the country can get underway soon, but that could be a problem considering some reports are estimating rebuilding costs so exceed 4.1 billion dollars[3]. Hopefully the cleanup efforts will go okay, but most companies are just playing the waiting game for now.
